Veteran’s victory at final race
Allan Bakes has comprehensively won the Professional Cross Country Club of Tasmania's Sea Lyons Swim School 8km handicap at Burnie on Sunday.
Joining the club six years ago, Bakes only other race win was over an identical distance in 2010.
The 72-year-old veteran has enjoyed a quality season with a number of promising results throughout the year.
Bakes took the lead from Louise Morse just after the halfway turn then set his sights on the finish line.
Kim Denwer and Julian Lesek ran well to fill the podium placings while Dave Murton also found the course to his liking crossing the line in fourth position.
Over 80 runners assembled at the Burnie Surf Club to be briefed by the starter before heading out on the out-and-back layout to Cooee in sunny conditions.
After a number of months away from racing for both runners Lyndon Stott outsprinted Brooke Fehlberg to the line to claim fifth as Club Champion Judy Ray followed.
David Sweetman, winner of the recent half marathon, proved last weekend's top ten placing was no fluke with another impressive effort that saw him finish just outside in eleventh position.
