Race 9a and 9b Devonport, Everyday Lions Female 5km Handicap/Simons Design Centre Male 5km Handicap Report

Sunday saw the inaugural running of the Everyday Lions Female 5km Handicap, and the Simons Design Centre Male 5km Handicap in Devonport. Cool, blustery conditions greeted runners for the flat four lap circuit around Meercroft Park.

The men’s race was conducted first, with Raymond Spinks leading the field out closely followed by Ken Williams. It took until the final straight for Brendan Burr to take the lead off Ken, holding on to victory from a fast charging Shaun Batten and Will van Rooyen.

Brendan joined the club in 2002 at sixteen years old and returned to the club in 2019 after a fifteen-year hiatus. Brendan is coached by Brian Lyons at Everyday Lions, and is earning reward for his effort, breaking the twenty-minute barrier in the race.

Young charger Thomas Winkel took out the fastest time, with a blistering time of 15:59.

The women’s race followed the men’s, with Selina Crispin breaking through for her first win with the club. She was closely followed by Emily Aichberger and Anne Thomas.

Selina joined the club last year and has raced almost every race since joining. She had previously finished no higher than eighth position, pulling out a great performance to take the victory. She cements herself in the record books as the first winner of a female only race with the PCCCT. She was presented her trophy by the club’s first female member, Ann Ketelaar, to honour the occasion.

Fastest time was taken out by Lyn Saint-John, in a time of 20:11.

In the earlier nominated time event, the winners were Matthew Robertson, Sarah Lakeland, Heath Bramich, and Brian Paine.

Please note: the meeting place is at Meercroft Park.

Toilets and changerooms in the new facilities will be available.

The course is a very simple one. It is four clockwise laps, plus a bit, of the streets surrounding Meercroft Park. Care will be needed running the back straight, North Street, as there is no footpath there.

Race 9a and 9b Devonport, Everyday Lions Female 5km Handicap/Simons Design Centre Male 5km Handicap Preview

This Sunday will see the running of the Meercroft 5km split division races in Devonport. The course is a flat, fast, four lap course on the road around Meercroft Park.

In previous years the divisions have been split into Front-Markers and Back-Markers. This year will see the divisions split by gender, with the Simons Design Centre Male Handicap being run as the curtain raiser before the Everyday Lions Female Handicap.

The three female placegetters in the Club Championships look a chance to take out the female race

It’s hard to go past Ellen Burgess as the favourite for the women, finishing fourth in the handicap race last week and second in the 10km championships. She also ran strong for third in the Mountain Classic, so a win is well within her grasp.

Winner of the club championships, Lyn Saint-John will be well suited to the quick course. Third place getter, Anna Murton, will also be well in the mix.

Emma Turner and Christine Wright are others to watch, both recording good results last week.

For the men, Nigel Baptist looks to be the pick of the bunch. Finishing third last week, with a handful of placings throughout the year, he is due for a win. Tony Abel has continued his rapid improvement this year, looking a chance to record a second win this year.

Young charger Thomas Murton will also be close running from the back mark, with the flat fast course suiting him well.

Runners are reminded that entries are online only and close at 6pm Friday. The men’s race will start at 9:30am Sunday, with the female’s race to follow. New members are always welcome and encouraged to check our website. www.pccct.org

Race 8 Physiotas City of Devonport 10km Handicap/Molly Malones 10km Championships Report

Cool and overcast conditions greeted 55 runners on Sunday for Race 8 of the PCCCT Season.

The Physiotas City of Devonport 10km Handicap was run in conjunction with the Molly Malones 10km Championships, as a sealed handicap mass start event. This created much excitement and anticipation, with the handicap winner not known until presentations.

Thomas Murton (middle) came first, from Hayden Bishop (right) and Ben Brockman (left)

As the event was the club championships, the first runners across the line took out the placings. Thomas Murton broke the tape first for the males, with a blistering time of 32:18. Over three minutes behind in second was Hayden Bishop, followed by Ben Brockman for third.

Lyn Saint-John (middle) won from Ellen Burgess (left) and Anna Murton (right)

The female championships were taken out by Lyn Saint-John, in a time of 41:22. She broke the tape four minutes ahead of Ellen Burgess in second, with Anna Murton rounding out the top three.

David Wright took home the shield for the handicap race

The handicap race was taken out by pre-race favourite, David Wright. Having won two races previously, David is a fixture of the club having run 230 races to date. His last win was in 2013 and has since battled injuries over several years. Since retiring, David has managed to work through his injuries and start returning to some top form.

Tony Abel ran a strong race, placing in second. Nigel Baptist finished third, with a win surely soon in his sights. Ellen Burgess and Thomas Murton rounded out the top five.

Hannah Elphinstone took out the earlier nominated time event.

Race 8 Physiotas City of Devonport 10km Handicap/Molly Malones 10km Championships Preview

Race eight of the PCCCT season heads to Devonport, for the running of the Physiotas City of Devonport 10km Handicap. The course utilises walking tracks in the Devonport area, with a mix of sealed paths and sawdust to contend with.

This event will also incorporate the Molly Malone’s 10km Club Championships. As such, the race will be a mass start, seeing all members start at the same time. The first three males and females across the line will be the placegetters in the Championships. Handicaps will be applied after the race to determine the winner of the Handicap race.

Thomas Murton will be the clear favourite to take out the championships for the men, with co-marker Thomas Winkel in hot pursuit. Hayden Bishop and Sam Mawer will also be in contention for a placing. Lyn Saint-John, Felicity Lovatt, and Brooke Fehlberg look set to battle it out for the women, though Natasha Mapley could change all that if she returns for her first run with the club this year.

David looks hot favourite to take out the handicap race

With the mass start format, the handicap winner could be a surprise. It’s hard to go past David Wright though, with two second places already this season. Dominic Troughton and Nigel Baptist are also strong chances, recording strong results all season.

Runners are reminded that entries are online only and close at 6pm Friday. The race will start at 9:30am Sunday. New members are always welcome and encouraged to check our website. www.pccct.org

Race 7 High on Penguin Burnie to Ridgley Mountain Classic 16.5km Handicaps and Race Brief

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Please note: there will be no nominated time event today.

There will be drink stations but you need to place your own drink bottles in the collection crates at the start. Please make sure they have your name and number on them.

If you have a supporter providing you with drinks/nourishment, they must do this at the drink stations. We don’t want runners or supporters crossing over the road during the race at random spots.

Please be very careful on this course because you will be running across intersections and driveways which won’t have marshals.

The meeting place is at the cenotaph in West Park.

Run east towards the gate and then up the path inside the park adjacent to West Park Grove. Exit the park and continue on the right -hand side of the road to Fortuna Avenue. Turn right and continue to the roundabout at Brickport Road.

Here you will be crossed over to the footpath on the right-hand side. Continue until you reach Three Mile Line Road and turn right.

Continue until you reach West Moorville Road and turn left. Stay on this road until you reach its junction with Ridgley Highway, then go straight ahead before finally turning right to finish in the car park at the Ridgley Football Club.

Race 7 High on Penguin Burnie to Ridgley Mountain Classic Preview

The first of the season’s major races will be run this Sunday, with the running of the High on Penguin Mountain Classic 16.5km Handicap.

Starting at Burnie Park, the course heads up via West Park Grove, Mooreville and West Moorville, to finish at Ridgley. It has a reputation for being a very tough course, with over 400m of elevation gained over the distance. It typically has suited the stronger runners, who can maintain a solid pace over the incline.

Murton looks set to break the tape on Sunday

One such runner will be the backmarker, Thomas Murton. Whilst being fast, he also thrives on tough courses. Examples include multiple first placings at Gone Nuts, as well as a strong time of two hours and thirty-one minutes at the Easter Marathon this year. He always performs well in these big races and will be one to watch, storming through the field from the back mark.

A previous winner, Ellen Burgess, is also a strong chance. She has proven herself on this course before and wouldn’t surprise if she scored herself another victory in this race.

Brendan Burr and Nigel Baptist have recorded good results all season and could bring out a winning performance with the excitement of a bigger race.

Others to watch are the “Railton-Rocket” Gerard Lowry, and Ben Brockman.

Entries have now closed, with the first runner away at 9:30am. Handicaps, as well as the Race Brief, will be posted on Friday at 6pm.

Whilst entries have closed for this race, entries are open for the Devonport 10km the following week. New members are always welcomed and encouraged to check out the website. www.pccct.org

There will be no nominated time event this week.

Race 6 Fernglade, Wilkinson’s Pharmacy 6km Handicap

NOTE: There is a typo in the title of the race on the handicaps. The distance is listed as 9km, but the race is 6km. The handicaps are correct for 6km, it is just a typo in the title.

COURSE

Course begins on Fernglade Road outside top entrance to Pony Club. Proceed down the road on the left hand side to the bottom entrance to Fernglade and turn left before the bridge into Fernglade itself. Continue on the road, past the picnic area and onto the track. Follow track right through to the pumphouse. Turn around large witches hat and proceed back up the road towards top entrance. Turn left about half-way up onto the track which will take you back down to bottom gate.

From here you will be directed up the road on the western side (now right hand side) past starting point and up to the second turning witches hat. Turn around and come back down the same side of the road to be directed into Fernpark Pony Club at the top gate. Witches hats and painted arrows will guide you on a 2km loop of the pony club to finish in front of the clubrooms.

NOTES

As per usual when running on the road please remember safety is your responsibility also. Please follow the directions of all marshals. Last year some runners crossed the road prematurely, meaning we were running on both sides of the road and creating a potential traffic hazard. Please stay on western side of road until final crossing at the marshal.

As this course is in the bush with dappled light and variable terrain, including roots and leaf litter, please avoid running with sunglasses and run with your eyes as well as your legs.
