Race 1 Wivenhoe, Burnie SportsPower 5km Handicap Report

The 2021 PCCCT’s  season has begun, with the running of the Burnie SportPower five kilometre Handicap at Wivenhoe.

With an eager turnout of sixty runners, members were very excited to get away for the first race of the season. With a limited form guide to pick the winner off, it was anyone’s race to win.

Runners enjoyed cool and sunny conditions on the out and back course to Fernglade.

Line Honours went to Narelle Jacobs, in her sixth race with the club. After running on and off over the last four years at parkrun and social group runs, she began training with the Everyday Lions group over the last 8 months. She credited her improvement to the interval training that she has been doing since joining that group.

Only twelve seconds behind her was Greg Malley, with fellow training stablemate Darlene Jacques rounding out the top three.

Other strong results were recorded by Dale Lancaster, Brendan Burr, and Josh Febey. These runners will surely pick up a win in 2021.

Fastest time for the men was recorded by Jason Felhberg, with Lyn Saint-John the fastest woman.

Earlier the nominated time winners were Mitchel Elphinstone, Eva Murell, Brian Paine, and Lucy van Rooyen.

Runners are reminded that this weeks Cradle Coast Sports and Events 7km handicap at Don will be held at 6pm Friday. Entries are required by 6pm Wednesday on the website.

Race 1 Wivenhoe, Burnie SportsPower 5km Handicaps and Race Brief

This course consists of a simple out and back starting in the Wivenhoe Showgrounds.

The race starts in front of the grandstand the western side of the Showgrounds.  The course then exists the NW gate and immediately crosses Pearl St.  The course continues along the left side of Main Rd until River Rd where it heads south for ~30m before crossing River Rd and heading north to the Bass Highway.  Runners cross the Emu River and then turn left following Massy-Greene Dr before turning left onto the path following Fern Glade Rd.  When the path reaches the small carpark the course crosses Fern Glade Rd taking the left side of the path fork, over the small hill and continues to the turnaround at the entrance to Fern Glade Reserve.  On the return, runners will go over the small hill and take the left fork in the path before crossing over Fern Glade Rd.  The course then backtracks to Wivenhoe and the finish chute in the Showgrounds.

Notes:

  1. As this course is an out and back following the same path in both directions, all runners are requested to keep to the left side of the path wherever practical.  This is especially necessary on the path along Fern Glade Rd where runners will be passing each other in both directions.
  2. There are four road crossings on this course in each direction.  The major crossings will be marshalled, but runners are reminded that they do not have right of way and to take due care at all crossings.
  3. When warming up and moving towards the start area, people are reminded that runners may be starting their race.  Please take care to avoid interfering with runners already on course.

Race 1 Wivenhoe, Burnie SportsPower 5km Handicap Preview

Jason Scott is a strong favourite for this weeks race

After a shortened season in 2020 due to COVID-19, the PCCCT will commence a full-length season this Sunday. Our first event of the season is the Burnie SportsPower 5km Handicap. Starting at the Wivenhoe Showgrounds, the out-and-back course heads out to the Fernglade Reserve.

All handicaps have been reset to the start of 2020, allowing the nine winners in last year’s season a chance at a trophy and sash.

The biggest chance out of that group looks to be Jason Scott, who has continued to improve since his win last year. Nick Young and Darlene Jacques are also strong chances, whilst Josh Febey cannot be discounted.

Ellen Burgess and Adrian Mann were unlucky not to break the tape last year and wouldn’t surprise with a victory.

The race will begin at 9:30am with entries closing at 6pm Friday. As entries are online only, runners will need to ensure that they are registered and entered into the race by this time.

The minimum age to run handicapped races is fifteen but nominated time races over a shorter distance are held 30 minutes prior to most races. Runners need to be registered before arriving, however they can enter the race on the day.

New members are most welcome and will be supplied with a race number on the day. Previous members are asked to return their timing chips, as they will not be used for the foreseeable future.

Race 9 – “Remembering Ron Chequer” Wynyard 9km Race Briefing and Handicaps

If you are not feeling well, especially if you have cold/flu systems, on Sunday morning please don’t come to the run.

The meeting place is at Gutteridge Gardens, Wynyard.

There is limited parking in the Gardens carpark, so please leave this for other patrons and people with mobility problems or small children. There is parking at the wharf and in nearby streets.

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Welcome to new members Paul Homan and Lukas Pilkington, and new nominated time members.

Please be aware we are sharing paths with the public and need to give other users due consideration.

The course: The race starts near the soundshell and heads north-west on the path beside the river.

After ~1.5km you will come to Table Cape Road where it crosses the river. Cross the road to the left-hand side and then cross the bridge. Immediately over the bridge, turn left and follow the path for ~2.5km until you reach the Bass Highway.

Here, again cross over the river and run back to Table Cape Road along the southern side of the river. Recross the road and then retrace your steps back to the finish.

Please be careful crossing the road on each of the two occasions that we do.

Care needed: the path along the sides of the river is windy and narrow in parts. There are also rock/root trip hazards and some stairs. Please be careful. You want to get back safely to your awaiting sausage or veggie burger.

Please stay after the run to remember Ron and celebrate a successful season.

Please keep COVIDSafe distance between you and other runners, especially if you are following someone else. Please read our COVIDSafe plan if you haven’t done so. Thank you very much to our wonderful season sponsors which are all listed on our website.

See you next week at Wynyard for Race 9, our final race of the season!

Race 8 – Coles Beach, Devonport 7km Handicaps and Race Briefing

If you are not feeling well, especially if you have cold/flu systems, on Sunday morning please don’t come to the run.

The meeting place is at Coles Beach, Devonport.

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Welcome to new runners and new nominated time members.

The course: The race start will be on the grassed area near the BBQ to the west of the Coles Beach carpark. Head west and follow the shoreline to the Don River where the path turns left and follows up the river. It takes you under the train bridge and up to the sealed cycle/walk path at the bottom of the Don College oval.

Turn right taking the path until you cross the Don River Railway crossing then immediately turn right off the sealed path onto the sawdust track. Do NOT continue on the sealed path.

NOTE: a fresh, deep layer of sawdust has recently been spread on the first part of the track. It is a bit uneven so care is needed (though any landing would be very soft).

Stay on the sawdust track; don’t take any tracks off to the right or left. It will bring you to a left turn when almost to the pool. Keep on the track until you again reach the cycle/walk path.

Turn right and head up to the Aquatic Centre car park. Run on the path above the carpark, across the road entrance to the carpark (care needed!) and continue down the hill to the first switchback which will be the turn.

Then repeat your steps back to the finish.

We should be right with the Don River Railway train. The first run doesn’t leave until 10:00pm. However, please don’t take any risks if you and it do happen to get to the crossing together. It is very short and will cross quickly.

Please keep COVIDSafe distance between you and other runners, especially if you are following someone else. Please read our COVIDSafe plan if you haven’t done so. Thank you very much to our wonderful season sponsors which are all listed on our website.
