Race 6 – Turners Beach 7km Handicaps and Race Briefing

If you are not feeling well, especially if you have cold/flu systems, on Sunday morning please don’t come to the run.

The meeting place is at the Berry Patch at Turners Beach which will be available for coffees/ice-creams and/or brunch after the race.

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Welcome to new runners: and new nominated time members.

The course: Starting at the Berry Patch, run towards the river, almost to the train bridge, where you cross the railway line (care needed!) and enter the bush, following the path back to the left around the marshy area.

Please note: there are some muddy puddles in this section so consider wearing old footwear if you want to plough through them rather than go around. Please take care.

When you arrive at Lukin Street, turn right and then right again, into the bush. DON’T run down the grassy lane.

Follow the witch’s hats and path out onto the end of the Esplanade. Run on the river/beach side of the Esplanade eventually turning left past where the old service station used to be. Continue to Lethborg Avenue and turn right. The turn is about 200 metres along. Return exactly the same way as you ran out, again staying on the beach/river side of the Esplanade (so we don’t have to worry about the streets).

It will be well marked with witch’s hats and fingers.

Be careful of cars in the vicinity of La Mar Café.

Rod and Judith Priestly will be providing the voucher for the winner while the Berry Patch is giving us some vouchers for the random draw prizes. These will be presented following the race.

Please keep COVIDSafe distance between you and other runners, especially if you are following someone else. Please read our COVIDSafe plan if you haven’t done so. Thank you very much to our wonderful season sponsors which are all listed on our website.

Race 5 – Burnie Romaine Park Reserve 6km Handicaps and Race Briefing

This course consists of four laps (1 large and 3 small) around the Romaine park area.  This should provide great viewing options for spectators allowing them to follow the race as it unfolds.

The race starts on the eastern side of the Romaine Creek dam opposite the carpark off Amanda Crescent.  For lap 1, runners then cross the dam wall and run around the dam in an anticlockwise direction following the main track for 600m.  At this point runners reach a T intersection and the lap turns right up the hill, following the main track for another 500m before reaching the turn around point and returning via the dirt track that branches off the main track.  The lap continues to follow the dirt track heading north down the park fence line for 1000 m, past the dam to another turn around point which re-joins the main track and heads back towards the start area.  Lap 2 begins once runners reach the dam wall.  Lap 2 continues along the same track as lap 1 until the T intersection.  At this point runners continue straight and follow the main track for 600m back to the start area.  Laps 3 and 4 are repeats of lap 2.  After completing lap 4 runners will cross the dam wall a final time and the finish chute is on the left of the track near the children’s playground and carpark.

Notes:

  1. Parking is limited in the Romaine carpark.  Therefore, all competitors that are able, are requested to park in Blackwood Parade or Kingsley Avenue.  This is to ensure access to the park area for other users and club members who are travelling with people who have mobility issues and/or small children.
  2. When warming up and moving towards the start area, people are reminded that runners may be starting their race.  As the main track narrows near the dam wall, please avoid interfering with runners already on course.  If possible, please approach the start area by walking in an anticlockwise direction around the dam.
  3. Given the rain forecast for this weekend, parts of the course are likely to be damp and muddy underfoot.  However, there will not be any heavy mud sections.  Please choose your footwear accordingly.

Race 4 – Spreyton 5km Handicaps and Race Briefing

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

Welcome to new runners: Matthew Lardner, Sabrina Shields, Narelle Jacobs and Geoffrey Reid and new nominated time members today.

The meeting place is at the Spreyton Cider Co cidery on Melrose Road. However, the start will be in the big paddock across Sheffield Road where we have started in recent years. Please be careful crossing Sheffield Road.

IMPORTANT: do NOT do your warm-up on Sheffield Road. Use the paddock or the area around the cidery.

The course: Run straight up the paddock to Jowetts Lane and turn left. Follow the road (stay on the left) until a finger directs you left into an orchard where you immediately turn right and run along the top of the orchard.

Follow the witch’s hats which will take you along the top of the apple orchards until you come to an enclosed cherry orchard. Continue straight through and exit onto Pilgrims Road. Turn left and continue down to Sheffield Road.

Turn right and run along the footpath about 50 m until the turn. Return retracing your steps.

It will be well marked with witch’s hats and fingers.

The Spreyton Cider Co will be providing the voucher for the winner plus numerous random draw prizes. The random draw prizes will need to be collected after the race so please stay for the draw.

Handicaps

Please ensure you are at the start line for your posted handicap time. Race start is at 9:30am.

A very warm welcome to all those having their first run with the Club today: Amy Lamprecht, Andreas Petersen, Paul Pilkiigton, Emily Rataj, Catherine Bell, Will van Rooyen, Adrian Mann, Kristie Wilson, Anne Thomas and Troy Donald.

We will be using the main cycle/walk track. It is certain that there will be members of the public also on the track. Please give due consideration to others and stay at least 1.5m away. The path is quite wide and, in most places, has wide grass verges.

The course: We will start just over William Street near Coles Beach Road. Follow the main sealed path all the way to the railway crossing at Don College. Cross over and stay on the sealed path heading towards the pool. The turn is about 40 metres from there. Turn and come back the same way. See the map.

Please be very careful crossing the road near the Coles Beach carpark. We will have a marshal there.

We don’t expect there to be trains crossing but if there is, don’t take any risks.

Please keep COVIDSafe distance between you and other runners, especially if you are following someone else.

Please read our COVIDSafe plan if you haven’t done so.

Thank you very much to our wonderful season sponsors which are all listed on our website.

Twelve Questions with…… Nick Young.

1 Your favourite 2 club races

My 2 favourite club races are Gunns Plains 13.5 km and Stanley 8km. I love the openness of the courses and that you can see the runners ahead of you.

2 Which club races have you won?
I have won two club races, 7km at Heybridge in 2013 and 5km at Cooee in 2015. I haven’t won in over 100 starts since!

3 Running tips
Listen to your body, don’t overtrain and take a break occasionally. Do your long runs slowly and running hills will get you fit. It’s meant to be fun, so enjoy it.

4 Longest distance you have run
I guess that my longest run is 14 080 km as I recently finished Run Down Under, a virtual run around Australia. My longest individual runs have been marathons. I have done five.

5 Do you have a training partner/group?
I sometimes run with the Sole Mates group in Burnie, but I’ll run with pretty much anyone around my pace and ability. Sven and Karina Mason and I have run together a lot over the last 7 or 8 years.

6 Your favourite local places to run
I run the Ulverstone pathway a lot, but I do like to run on grass and train on the East Ulverstone football ground a bit.

7 Do you have a post ISO running goal?
Post ISO I would like to get to 200 club runs without breaking down! I will keep running as long as I am able to, and would like to do a bit more coaching as well.

8 Other interests/sports
I don’t currently compete in any other sports but like cycling and swimming.

9 Most memorable running experience
My most memorable running experience would have to be finishing my first Point to Pinnacle in a blizzard. I was totally underprepared for the conditions and it was below freezing, with howling wind and sleet for the last 3 km. I was shivering so much I couldn’t get my bag open to get dry clothes out. Luckily someone helped me and lent me a warm jacket otherwise I would have been in real trouble. And yes, I went back and ran it again!

10 When did you start running and what inspired you to start?
I started running in 2010. I hadn’t run competitively since school, where I only ran middle distance. I had been cycling and swimming to get fit after a back injury, and thought I would try jogging to mix it up a bit. I soon realised that I just loved running and like all newbies I was over enthusiastic and read everything about running, entered every event on the calendar, talked constantly about running and ran whenever I got the chance.

11 What is something about you most people wouldn’t know?
I can’t stand the colour purple.

12 If you could holiday anywhere, where would you go and what would you do?
I recently bought a camper van and Jan and I postponed a trip to the mainland touring when the pandemic struck. A camper van touring holiday is still what I’d like to do.
