Race 9 – “Remembering Ron Chequer” Wynyard 9km Report

Members headed to Wynyard for Sunday’s race, a nine-kilometre handicap taking in tracks beside the Inglis River.

The event was tagged the “Remembering Ron Chequer” Run and a good field attended to commemorate their fellow-runner and friend who died suddenly earlier this year. Members of Ron’s family were able to attend and stay on for the barbecue after the race.

Dale Lancaster led the field away but just after the half-way turn, she was overtaken by Narelle Jacobs, who then led until the last kilometre when passed by the eventual winner, Josh Febey.

This was Febey’s third win with the Club, the last coming in his home town of Cooee two years ago. With the COVID-19 situation, like many others, he has found himself training more than ever, leading to improved form.

First year runner, Adrian Mann, had his highest finish to date to be runner-up while Ellen Burgess ran right up to her great performance last week for third.

Winner of race 1, Alex Reimer, showed he has held his form being next to finish just in front of Patrick McMahon, Owen Thomas and Jacobs who held on well.

Backmarkers Thomas Murton and Hayden Bishop put in great efforts to finish in the ten, with pre-race favourite, Paul Birch splitting the two in ninth.

Fastest male and female were Murton (32:16) and Amie Bramich (41:49) respectively.

Earlier, nominated time winners were Asher Wilson, Sophie Reimer, Mitchell Elphinstone and Brian Paine.

Following the race, President Barry Ling presented PCCCT Life Memberships to Rod Viney and Malcolm Nutting while Greg Smith, Mike Webster, Peter Elphinstone and Michael Bates were given Service Awards.

Race 8 – Coles Beach, Devonport 7km Report

Warm sunny conditions greeted the fifty-four starters in race 8 of the season, a seven-kilometre handicap starting at Coles Beach.

This event with a variety of surfaces and some small inclines, took competitors along the Don River, through the Don Reserve to the Aquatic Centre and return.

It provided some surprising results as many of the pre-race favourites were out-shone by other runners recording their best efforts for the year.

Devonport runner, Richard Lawson, was inspired by a small lift in his handicap to race to his first victory in four years with the Club. Despite a second and couple of thirds, previously, he had never broken the tape and was thrilled to do so on Sunday.

He didn’t do much training this year until the season started so has been improving during its course, culminating in this victory. He was also spurred on by his grandchildren who were positioned at the halfway mark to give him encouragement.

Ellen Burgess was just seven seconds back in second place, closely followed by Adrian Mann, Paul Birch, who showed a welcome return to form, and Manny Singh.

Fastest of the men was Hayden Bishop with Kendall Buckley returning the best time among the women.

Other promising performances were recorded by Josh Febey and Steven Tammens, while Narelle Jacobs, Shaun Batten and Selina Crispin continued their good form to round out “the ten”.

Earlier, nominated time winners Amanda Reimer, Brian Paine, Sarah Lakeland and Mia Fehlberg.

Race 7 – West Beach, Burnie 7km Handicap Report

Race seven of the PCCCT season presented runners with a fast, flat out-and-back seven-kilometre course from West Beach to Cooee Point. Setting off into a strong headwind, competitors then enjoyed a corresponding tailwind on the return trip.

Numbers were again very pleasing despite the testing conditions.

Frontmarker, Dale Lancaster, led the field away, was in front for a long time and looking like she may be able to hold on for the victory.

In the end, she finished a creditable third being overtaken in the last kilometre, firstly by second placegetter Narelle Jacobs and then eventual winner, Ulverstone runner, Nick Young.

It was a well-deserved win by Young who has been knocking on the door all season while doing some solid training. In his tenth year with the Club, this was his third win with his last success coming five years ago.

Jacobs, in her first season with the PCCCT, ran her best race to date and will be looking to win one of the two remaining events.

Catherine Bell and Graham Higgins ran up to their recent good placings to again finish close-up, while Josh Febey looked in great form finishing strongly into sixth.

Fastest of the men was Jono Price (25:08) with the fastest woman being Amie Bramich (30:19).

Earlier, nominated time winners were Ashley and Mia Fehlberg, Sophie Reimer, Maya Bramich and Hannah Elphinstone.

Race 6 – Turners Beach 7km Handicap Report

Race six of the season was the longest of the season to date. A scenic out-and-back course at Turners Beach and mostly flat, the seven-kilometres were relished by the runners and some good times were recorded. The excellent weather conditions helped and a large field attended.

After a string of excellent runs, Burnie runner Kendall Buckley was finally able to savour breaking the tape. In her three previous runs this year, she had finished third twice and second last week so was certainly due for a win.

This is her first year with the Club and her second year of running, commencing last year with parkrun. Having taken it up to regain fitness after having her family of three children, she has found how much she loves it. In particular, since being involved with the PCCCT she has stepped up her training with noticeable results.

Another runner in his first season with the Club, Graham Higgins, was a strong second after starting off the same handicap as Buckley, while one of the backmarkers, Hayden Bishop, was an excellent third.

One of the pre-race favourites, Nick Young, was fourth just in front of last runner to start, Bryan Tuit, who charged home recording the fastest time for the men.

As well as the victory, Buckley took fastest woman honours.

Earlier, nominated time winners were Stevie Vassiadis, Libby Crispin and Brian Paine.

Race 5 – Romaine Park Reserve 6km Handicap Report

An excellent field of 64 runners lined up for the start of race five of the PCCCT’s season at the Romaine Park Reserve in Burnie on Sunday.

Held completely within the Reserve, the 6km race consisted of four laps providing spectators with great viewing.

It was run on gravel paths which also made a nice change, with a few small hills to keep things interesting.

Forest runner, Mathew Lardner, having his first race with the Club was a comfortable winner from Kendall Buckley and Shaun Batten.

Running around 40km per week, Lardner always trains by himself and found running in a competitive mode brought out his very best, leading to his victory.

He had only run with others previously in a couple of 10km fun runs and joined the Club to meet some like-minded individuals.

Both Buckley and Batten must surely get a win in the next month as they have been near to winning every week since race the first race.

Hayden Bishop ran well from a back mark for fifth, just behind Paul Pilkington.

Frontmarker, Dale Lancaster, led for a long way and hung on well to finish in “the ten”.

Others to catch the eye included.Selina Crispin, Steve Powell and Owen Thomas.

Fastest time for the men was recorded by Thomas Murton (19:53) with Buckley (26:02) the fastest woman.

Earlier the nominated time winners were Mitchell Elphinstone, Brian Paine and Mia Fehlberg.
