Warm sunny conditions greeted the fifty-four starters in race 8 of the season, a seven-kilometre handicap starting at Coles Beach.
This event with a variety of surfaces and some small inclines, took competitors along the Don River, through the Don Reserve to the Aquatic Centre and return.
It provided some surprising results as many of the pre-race favourites were out-shone by other runners recording their best efforts for the year.
Devonport runner, Richard Lawson, was inspired by a small lift in his handicap to race to his first victory in four years with the Club. Despite a second and couple of thirds, previously, he had never broken the tape and was thrilled to do so on Sunday.
He didn’t do much training this year until the season started so has been improving during its course, culminating in this victory. He was also spurred on by his grandchildren who were positioned at the halfway mark to give him encouragement.
Ellen Burgess was just seven seconds back in second place, closely followed by Adrian Mann, Paul Birch, who showed a welcome return to form, and Manny Singh.
Fastest of the men was Hayden Bishop with Kendall Buckley returning the best time among the women.
Other promising performances were recorded by Josh Febey and Steven Tammens, while Narelle Jacobs, Shaun Batten and Selina Crispin continued their good form to round out “the ten”.
Earlier, nominated time winners Amanda Reimer, Brian Paine, Sarah Lakeland and Mia Fehlberg.
