Calcutta Rules

The PCCCT Inc. conducts a Calcutta on the Wynyard-Burnie Feature Race to be run on Sunday 11 September 2022.
How does it work?
The Calcutta is divided into two stages:

1.The Ticket Draw
Tickets are sold for $2.00 in the weeks leading up to the race. On Tuesday 7 September. The Calcutta commences with one ticket being drawn for each runner in the Feature Race. If your ticket is drawn you are then the “drawer” of that particular runner. The result of the draw will be published on the website All proceeds of the ticket draw go into the prize pool.

2.The Auction
Following the ticket draw we get down to the business of the auction. This will take place at the The Point, West Park commencing at 7.30 pm on Friday 9 September
Each runner will be auctioned to the attendees at the Calcutta, who have the opportunity to bid for that runner.

After the hammer fall on each runner:

  • the person with the highest bid becomes the owner of that runner
  • 50% of the sale price goes to the person who drew that runner in the ticket draw
  • the remaining 50% goes into the ever growing prize pool
After the race on Sunday 11 September, the prize pool is divided as follows:
  • 65% to the owner of the winning runner
  • 15% to the owner of the second placegetter
  • 10% to the owner of the third placegetter
  • 10% to the PCCCT to cover printing costs of tickets
    and the Calcutta permit fee.

A message from your Handicappers…

Handicapping runners is a daunting task, endeavouring to be fair and just to all competitors.

A Handicapper is appointed at our Annual General Meeting. It is a voluntary position and it requires a considerable amount of time dedicated to the task each and every week.

It should be noted that there are notes on the PCCCT Website (found here) in reference to Handicapping. That article stipulates that each and every handicap is at the Handicapper’s discretion which means no other person will have a say in handicaps.

A Base Handicap is allotted to each runner over a 5 km distance. That handicap is just a guide to set handicaps for a particular race which enables adjustments to be made taking in all scenarios as outlined on the Website. In essence your handicap may vary from week to week .

If a runner is competing at his/her best and doesn’t take the opportunity of winning when it arises you may miss out in obtaining that accolade as other competitors may have a better opportunity going forward . (No holding back or you might miss the boat)

A note of interest. We endeavour to get 30 runners within 3 minutes of the finish time each week.

Your Handicappers,

Pat McMahon

Greg Smith

2022 Season

1. Membership and entries can only be done on-line via the Club website. The link is now available.
2. Season membership is $60. 3. Each race entry is $6 but you have the option of paying upfront for all 20 races up to 13.5km (except the team events). The cost is $100 and means you won’t have to enter on a weekly basis as you will be entered automatically (you also save $20 😃). Total upfront cost = $160. The races over 13.5km (five in total), plus the team events, will need to be entered individually.
4. You can also pay $60 membership and then just pay the entry fee for each race you wish to run.
5. Nominated time events will be held at 9:00am. Registration for these can be done on-line only, for a cost of $10. Runners must be 15 to compete in the handicap events. As in recent years, 12, 13 and 14 year-olds can do their nominated time in the main (handicapped) event when it is 5km or 6km.
6. Generally, entries will close at 6:00pm the Friday night before the race if you are entering week by week. Some races will have earlier entry cut-off times.
7. Handicaps will be published on the website on Saturday evening along with the pre-race briefing. These will also be available on the van on Sunday morning.
8. Most races commence at 9:30am. If you are feeling unwell do not attend the race.
9. Remember to wear your Club number on your front.
10. Please keep 1.5m from others and use other COVID safe practices.
11. There will be three random draw vouchers to be drawn from all runners and volunteers involved in each race.

Start of season postponed

For all the latest news and updates please Like our Facebook page.

Last night your committee decided that the wisest course to undertake at the present time is to postpone the start to our season.

This morning parkrun has advised that all parkruns in Australia and New Zealand are suspended, at least until the end of March. At the last committee meeting we agreed that this would be a trigger for us to postpone.

In addition, everyone would be aware of the current regulations regarding social distancing. When we all gather at our events this is problematic.

Finally, with all the other cancellations, especially of sporting events, we could be viewed as irresponsible if we pressed on. This could lead to reputational damage to your Club.

We ask that everyone accepts this difficult decision.

If you have already registered, that still stands and you will be set to go when we are up and running. Similarly, those people who have paid the entry to race 1, that will be held in credit for your first run.

Your committee will be keeping in regular touch and will advise when we can get underway and the shape of the season. Clearly some races will be lost for this year.

Please keep checking here and Facebook for further announcements.

Keep safe and keep running (just not in big groups).

Rod (on behalf of President Barry and your committee).
